Speaks named 2016 AFIS distinguished senior

James Speaks

Mr. James Speaks has been named the 2016 Distinguished Senior for EKU's Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems.  He was honored during a presentation on Friday, April 15, at the School of Business College to Careers Conference.

The student is selected based on superior academic achievement, excellent leadership, citizenship, character and services to EKU.

Speaks, from Somerset, is graduating this May, Summa Cum Laude, with his Bachelor’s in Risk Management and Insurance. His perfect 4.0 GPA has earned an invitation into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the highest academic honor to which EKU students may aspire. Among his awards and recognitions is the coveted Anita Benedetti Student Involvement Award - a national award that pairs students with a mentor from the RIMS Student Advisory Council. He is also a recipient of the RIMS/CPCU Award and is a member of Gamma Iota Sigma, the insurance fraternity.

Not only has he participated in numerous insurance industry events, but his research paper won the 2015 Erie Insurance Paper Competition. Speaks is a published author in the Insurance Institute of Kentucky Journal for April 2015.

In addition to his impressive academic credentials, Speaks is EKU's starting football long snapper, Special Teams Captain, and athletic tutor. Speaks maintains his KHSAA official license in baseball and basketball and works with regional and state tournaments for middle school, AAU, and Little League. He is ranked in the top twelve umpires for Kentucky's 12th region.

Congratulations to James Speaks on being selected as the 2016 distinguished senior representing the Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems.

At the conference, the School of Business honored distinguished seniors and distinguished alumni from each of its academic departments. Ms. Jaclyn Badeau was selected as the AFIS departmental distinguished alum. In addition, recipients of scholarships and awards for the 2015-16 academic year were recognized and honored for their outstanding achievement.
